HIDE (USA / Dais Records)

HIDE are an electronic duo based in Chicago. The pair create dark and heavy sample-based compositions using a combination of self-sourced field recordings and various pop culture and media references. Their music is textured, minimal, and powerful, giving raw vulnerability a chance to unfurl. Their work is honest, confrontational, powerful and thought-provoking.
HIDE’s third album, Interior Terror (Dais Records, 2021) further abandons traditional concepts of song structure in favor of splintered rhythms and fevered, immediate release. Expanding on previous themes of autonomy and empowerment, Interior Terror addresses and questions the corporeal and immaterial body in a physical and metaphysical sense. Turning to the dread inside, reflecting on the world around us, HIDE gives voice to the power of destruction as a catalyst for hope, and to the collective experiences of those who’ve come before us as a wellspring of our own power. Raw vocal delivery of mantra-like prose issued forth yields a raging, plaintive wail that lulls, mocks, questions, proclaims and decries. A dearth of collected field recordings give way to more fluid arrangements while retaining a scathing urgency. The result is minimal, spacious, and jarring; a distant knocking grown into the pulse of a hypnotic dirge, drones emerge from shards of decomposed sound, bending, seething their way through your body.

“Chicago-based industrial duo Hide take their stark sounds to a far darker and more malevolent space”

CLOUD RAT (US / Artoffact Records)

Over the past ten years, Cloud Rat has established itself as one of the most compelling bands in the underground. Over a staggering number of releases – four full-length albums, eleven EPs and splits, a live album, and various other comps, in one decade – the Michigan band has made a name for itself via sheer emotion and musical freedom. NPR Music called Cloud Rat’s 2013 album, Moksha, “a feral, fearsome and fearless piece of work.” Noisey described a live show in 2015 with these words: “Cloud Rat is one of those rare bands whose music connects instantly, painfully – you feel the words, the riffs, and the all-consuming cacophony deep within the marrow of your bones, vibrating out into a hostile world.” Emerging from the space where hardcore punk spirals into grindcore, Cloud Rat is that and so much more. The band knows no limits and incorporates influences from across the map – black metal, noise, doom, goth, folk, and beyond – all while retaining its realness and urgency.

In May 2021 Cloud Rat released a brutal eight-minute long track “Mother Tongue ~ Glitter Belly” via the Adult Swim Singles series.

This recording was the first time the band had reunited since February of 2020, one month before the COVID-19 pandemic would shut down the entire United States and most of the world. The duality of the track was inspired by the pandemic, as it attempts to capture the chaos and conflicted emotions of many people across the globe.

Cloud Rat’s latest studio album Pollinator came out in 2019 via Canadian Artoffact imprint

“Cloud Rat has succeeded leaving us with an album that’s at once a call to action and a bloom of creativity in the field of extreme music”
